The organisation of public functions near S.K. Pottekkatt Square without obtaining prior permission from the civic authorities has been banned.

Responding positively to the plea of merchants, the district administration on Friday considered a few favourable changes in the total ban earlier imposed on the entry of vehicles to the renovated S.M. Street. The changes which were approved at a meeting attended by Labour Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan and Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran, include mainly the facilitation of the entry of two goods autorickshaws to the street between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. for easy movement of goods.

Only the two autorickshaws bearing special numbers issued by the district administration will be allowed entry to the street and that too during the permitted time. The restrictions imposed on the entry of vehicles to the parking space of Land World Centre on the street will also be lifted.

Parking curbs

Ministers and people’s representatives who attended the meeting after a visit to the street sought the revision of the parking restrictions after finding that it was causing huge inconvenience to shoppers. Henceforth, the entry of vehicles to Land World Centre’s parking space via Moideen Palli junction will be allowed. However, entry of vehicles from all other street roads will be restricted as usual.

The meeting also approved the plan of the district administration to ban all public functions near the S.K. Pottekkatt Square without obtaining prior permission from the city corporation authorities. Only small cultural events will be granted permission at the spot, where the District Tourism Promotion Council will provide microphone facility. A street manager too will be appointed to take care of the facilities.

Unlawful parking along Court Road and Taj Road will be banned to provide more space for pedestrians. Officials said action would be initiated against the parking of autorickshaws near the entrance of the street.
