The Church of South India (CSI), on Sunday, celebrated the 150th anniversary of its St. Mary’s English Church at Nadakkavu. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the valedictory of the sesquicentennial celebrations, which was attended by several followers.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Chandy said the contributions of the CSI missionaries in improving the academic sector in Kerala were memorable. “It was through their efforts that the people here understood the importance of English education,” he noted.
Mr. Chandy said most of the schools established by the CSI fraternity were catering to the underprivileged segments in the rural areas. Bishop Oommen also lauded the government for its initiative to introduce total ban on liquor in Kerala.
“The government deserves a pat on its back for saving families who were on the verge of peril,” he said.
B.N. Fenn, Bishop of C.S.I North Kerala Diocese, presided over the function. CSI Deputy Moderator Thomas K. Oommen, Bishop of Kunnamkulam Malabar Diocese Gregorios Mar Stephanos, St. Mary’s church vicar N.K. Prasad, general convener George Itty, A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, BJP leader P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, and DCC president K.C. Abu were present.
