Call to check prices of construction materials

July 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:09 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Construction Workers and Supervisors Association (CWSA) has called upon the State government to introduce a proper mechanism to check the prices of essential construction materials and address the continuing scarcity of materials for saving the ailing construction industry.

Addressing reporters here, Association leaders Shaji Chevarambalam and V. Bhaskaran said the restrictions imposed on quarrying and sand mining dealt a heavy blow to the entire construction sector in the State. The shortage of raw materials was proving to be a boon for the black-marketing lobby in the State, they said.

The government could meet the shortage of sand by dredging the accumulated sand deposits from reservoirs. Also technologies should be tapped for preparing sea sand for the construction industry, they said.

Stating there was no site insurance for majority of the labourers in the construction industry, the CWSA leaders said it should be considered as an immediate priority area for ensuring workers’ safety. The authorities could implement an insurance scheme easily by collecting a sum from the building owners while granting clearance to construction projects, they said.
