District Collector U.V. Jose has directed authorities to make scientific arrangements to manage embalmed body parts used for teaching in the anatomy laboratory of Government Medical College, Kozhikode.

Condemned

Inspecting the burial site at the medical college where local people had discovered a large quantity of body parts on Tuesday, the Collector condemned the act of burying them in an unscientific manner.

A group of children had discovered the body parts in the burial ground while they were playing on the ground nearby.

The medical college authorities said they were embalmed body parts, already used in the anatomy laboratory by students, and were buried so that skeletons could be extracted from them after decomposition to be later used in the laboratory.

Councillor of the medical college division of the Corporation Sherina Vijayan said the same system was being followed in the medical college for the past 60 years to manage used body parts.

Compound wall

“The burial should not be conducted in public and the space should not be accessible to any one other that the designated persons. The local people came to know about it as the compound wall had come down. Arrangements have been made to rebuild the compound wall within a week. The authorities could not manage the process properly this time due to the unusually large quantity of body parts,” she said. The Collector held a meeting with the local people as well as the medical college authorities and assured them of proper action against the contractor responsible for managing the body parts.
