Call for mass action to protect rivers

A mass action to strengthen measures for protection of rivers in district was proposed at a meeting of representatives of people’s groups engaged in river protection here on Wednesday.

Gandhian leader Thayatt Balan, who gave a call for people’s action to defeat attempts to ‘kill rivers,’ called for sustained vigil to protect rivers which were sources of drinking water.

Journalists who had been in the forefront of campaigns to protect rivers were honoured at the function which was organised by Iruvanji Samrakshana Samithi and other forums engaged in campaigns against river pollution.

Journalists P. Shamshuddin, C. Suresh Babu, Ranjit Mavoor, N.T. Ajaydas and Siddique Panoor were honoured.

M.P. Faiz, fourth standard student of Ansar English Medium School, who rescued from drowning a child who had fallen into a deep pit formed by sand extraction in Iruthullipuzha was also felicitated at the function held at Kozhikode Press Club.

Social workers Salam Nedukandi, writer Arsu, freedom fighter P. Vasu , social activist N. Balakrishnan, and Sreevalsan, convener of Paristhithi Samrakshana Samithi, were among those who spoke.
