Minting money is just a mouse-click away for some enterprising women in the city. For most, Facebook is not just a social networking site, but a platform for innovative online ventures.
Najla Nazar is one such entrepreneur who takes pride in her online avatar as a theme cake designer and supplier. ‘The Cake Stop,’ a page opened by Najila, has 348 ‘likes’ and a four-star rating. She has delivered over 100 special cakes to clients. “I started the initiative three years ago and my efforts have paid off. I bake mostly during my spare time and clients pick up cakes from my home,” says Najla, who lives at Chalappuram here.
The young entrepreneur says it is the Non-Resident Keralites hailing from Kozhikode who make use of her Facebook page. They place orders for their loved ones back home and make their celebrations special, she says.
Cakes Inn, Cake Magic, Cakes Calicut, and Cakes & Gifts are some of the popular cake dealers in the city who successfully manage the show through Facebook pages. The orders can be placed in the form of wall posts or messages and the page administrators contact the clients. Some entrepreneurs also offer home delivery.
Cakes Inn declares its USP on the cover photo: “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy cup cakes, and that’s kind of the same thing.” The new page has regular updates on new specialties.
