National Cadets Corps (NCC) unit of Government College Madappally has launched a novel programme to extend financial assistance to students from economically backward families at the college. The programme titled ‘Ness’ (NCC’S Educational Support Scheme) was planned by the unit members after realising that some students, especially from financially underprivileged backgrounds become drop outs due mid-way of their courses.
The NCC Cadets of the college has come forward to extend a helping hand to such students. As per the scheme it has been planned to collect Rs.10 per month from each NCC cadets as well as other students in the college who are interested to donate a small amount for a big cause. The fund raised in this way will be distributed among the most deserving students. According to K. Sijesh, Associate NCC Officer at the college, a number of students, especially girls from tribal families were found to be discontinuing their studies due to financial constraints. “We thought that it would be great if could collectively do something about it,” said Mr. Sijesh.
The details of these students will be kept confidential with the college Principal and details of the students who contributed to this fund will be displayed on the NCC notice board at the college, he said. This programme organized by NCC is the first of its kind in the history of Govt.College Madappally and probably the first in the region. This programme also aims to motivate NCC Cadets in other educational institutions to take up such programmes, said Deepak.R, Senior Under Officer.
The NESS Scheme was inaugurated by Lt. Col.S.B Singh,Commanding Officer,30(K) Bn NCC at the college at Madappally on Friday. The first instalment of the NESS Fund raised by NCC Cadets (Rs. 8000) was handed over to Abdul Assis Koroth, Vice Principal of the college by Lt.Col.S.B Singh in a function held at college auditorium.
Lt.Sijesh.K Associate NCC Officer welcomed the gathering. Dr.Abdul Assis Koroth, Vice Principal, Govt.College Madappally has delivered presidential address. Dr.Prakasan, CSS Co-ordinator, P.Vineethan,NSS Programme Officer and Abhijith ,Union Chairman spoke on the occasion.
