A 48-hour strike called by banking staff was complete in the district with none of the branches of nationalised banks opening shutters on the first day on Monday.
Bank unions, in separate statements, said there was zero transaction owing to the complete cooperation of the employees with the strike.
The strike was called in protest against the delay in the revision of salaries of the bank employees by the Union government, besides demands to end arbitrary reforms and mergers in the banking sector.
The district committee of the United Forum of Bank Unions said a two-day strike was planned in January this year, but was withdrawn after the intervention of the Central Labour Commissioner.
Bank Employees Federation of India district wing secretary E. Devadasan said the remuneration of the bank employees was “pitiable” as compared to other sectors.
The employees conducted a protest march outside the main branch of the State Bank of India at Mananchira.
The strike will continue on Tuesday.
