Anti-drug campaigns under way

Public campaigns, as part of the ‘War on Drug’ initiative of the city police, to fight drug abuse and illegal sale of narcotic substances have begun in the city.

A mass run from the Tali temple premises to the Kozhikode beach was organised on Sunday to mark the formal launch of the public awareness campaigns. Police officers said the aim of the project was to develop an efficient information exchange system between investigating officers and locals on the trade and use of drugs, especially among students. They said the project would gradually help the city achieve the tag of ‘drug-free zone’.

District Police Chief (Kozhikode city) J. Jayanath, on his official Facebook page, has said the details of legal actions and arrests in each illegal drug trafficking case will be handed over to the local bodies concerned and the Motor Vehicles Department authorities for further vigil. Along with stringent enforcement, the police will take all efforts to provide de-addiction support to those in need of it.

Campaigns will be held to make drug addicts aware about the importance of timely treatment. The police have also invited the public to submit suggestions through the official Facebook page to strengthen the scheme.
