The CPI(M) district secretariat has urged people to be vigilant against attempts made by “extremists outfits” to create disturbances in the name of the GAIL pipeline project in the Thamarassery region in Kozhikode.

CPI(M) district secretary P. Mohanan alleged here on Thursday that groups belonging to the Social Democratic Party of India, Popular Front of India and Solidarity Youth Movement from Malappuram district were involved in violent incidents that took place at Eranjimavu at Mukkom on Wednesday.

They were joined by anti-development and anti-Left forces, which pushed the local people into violent protests.

Extremist forces were behind the attack on the police personnel and GAIL officials. When the situation turned violent, those who carried out the violence escaped, but the local people were caught in the crossfire. PFI leaders also protested in front of the police demanding the release of culprits who attacked GAIL officials, said Mr. Mohanan.

The secretariat also blamed the United Democratic Front, the Congress and Indian Union Muslim League leaders of colluding with radical groups to hold protests in front of the police station.
