Action against illegal constructions

Complaints of irregularities in structures along Canoly canal

: The city Corporation has initiated action against unlawful constructions and land development activities along the Canoly canal near Kunduparamba and Eranhikkal. The legal action comes in the wake of detection of irregularities by private builders such as encroaching on public road.

One builder in the area has been issued stop memo after the Corporation received several complaints from residents in the area against the project. Also, it is alleged that the area used for the construction work was a recently-filled paddy field. The construction is being carried out after covering the board of the site with long tin sheets.

The residents alleged that illegal construction works in the area for commercial and large-scale residential projects had severely hit the availability of potable water in the region. Lacking legal action, several such small and big ventures had begun operations in the area by exploiting wetlands and unused paddy fields, they complained.

“Till very recently, the undergrowth in many of these areas along the Canoly canal in the Kunduparamba and Eranhikkal regions was a favourite spot for many to dump waste. As the land prices fell, people with business interests started operations in these areas flouting all the existing rules and regulations,” said a resident from Eranhikkal.
