A protest march taken out by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists to the office of the Deputy Director of Education, alleging corruption in the allotment of new Plus Two batches, ended in an open street fight with the police near the Mananchira square here on Thursday.

The police caned some of the activists who started to throw stones at them and tried to destroy the barricades. The area remained tense for nearly an hour as the activists, split into two groups, tried to interrupt the traffic and continued to manhandle the police on duty.

Some of the protesters managed to enter the Mananchira square and tried to throw stones at the police. They also used the flagpoles to beat up the police who were attempting to chase the violent crowd away.

The Kasaba police detained eight students, who were accused of attacking the police and interrupting the traffic at the busy junction. The police officials said that those who attacked the police would be traced shortly after examining the video footage.
