Learning swimming for children has been an expensive proposition in the city. But a new public pool at Nadakkavu is set to solve this problem.
Contributions from Kozhikode MLA, A. Pradeep Kumar’s funds and the District Sports Council have shaped into a swanky pool at Nadakkavu in the heart of the city. Set amidst a neat landscape of trimmed grass, tiles and decorative plants, the sparkling blue waters of the pool is ready to receive the young learner from November 8, the day of its inauguration.
“Kozhikode has probably two good pools in the city. But they are private. We needed a good public pool for our children to come and learn swimming. We expect a large number of them to turn up for swimming classes, especially considering the academic incentive that knowing swimming would earn them two grace marks in SSLC and Plus Two,” Mr. Kumar said.
Children can avail any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for swimming classes. There will be special coaches at their service. Classes are free of cost for them.
K.J. Mathai, president, District Sports Council, said the pool complex would in future sport a mini-pool, children’s sports park, cafeteria, conference hall and private party space.
There are also plans to cover the pool with a fibre sheet roof, he said.
“As of now, there is the pool and a facilitation centre. The total cost, I believe, would come to Rs. 2 crore,” he said.
He said that the total monthly expense for running the pool would come to Rs. 1.5 lakh.
“The money will be spent for the maintenance of the pool itself and for paying the staff, security, electricity and water filtration. The pool uses state-of-the-art filtration technology imported from Spain,” Mr. Mathai said.
He said there will be separate timings for the general public also.
