The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which did not field a candidate in the Malappuram Lok Sabha byelection, has said that the election result showed that the party’s independent stand has now become relevant.
Reacting to the results, SDPI State president P. Abdul Majeed Faisi said on Monday that while Left parties were able to garner more votes, the BJP failed to increase votes in spite of the party’s favourable situation at the national level. “The people of Malappuram have defeated the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its organisational network. This is a positive development,” he said.
He said the argument of the CPI(M) leadership that the big victory of the IUML candidate was due to minority polarisation was against reality. The CPI(M) had propagated this idea even during the campaigning. It had now dealt a blow to the image of the anti-fascist campaign of Left parties, he said.
