A pan-Indian touch to crafts expo

Local craft may be predominant on display at the 60 All India Handicrafts exhibition going on in Kozhikode but also in the line-up are brass sculptures from Aligarh, cotton bags from Delhi, saris from different parts of the country, and bamboo craft from Sikkim.

The exhibition is being held under the aegis of the Kerala State Handicrafts Apex Cooperative Society at the Surabhi emporium here.

The brass sculptures in varied sizes are available either in the pure gold finish or the antique finish.

The idols of Hindu gods like Ganesh and Krishna are priced in the higher range at around Rs.20,000 and are in great demand.

Local craftsmen

The exhibition is being organised primarily to promote local craftsmen.

But the craft from other States too find a place at the expo like bamboo crafts from Sikkim, wooden sculptures from Jaipur, and saris from Madurai and Chettinad.

The other major products featured include Aranmula metal mirrors, conchs, gold-plated jewellery, cotton bed sheets and furnishings from Rajasthan, Palakkad knives, leather products including bags and wallets, Ayurvedic soaps, and curios that are used in Feng Shui and Vaastu.

On display

White metal and black metal sculptures that are locally made, ‘Ashtamangalyam’ sets of 12 pieces each, and white wood sculptures are also greatly in demand at the exhibition, which will conclude on January 7.
