A library in memory of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, the ‘Sultan of Beypore’, will be launched at a government lower primary school near here this week.

According to a press release, the library being set up at the Government Fisheries L.P. School, Chaliyam, will have all the titles of Basheer, his biography, video CDs depicting the biographies of 50 writers, apart from the major works of prominent literary figures in Malayalam. There will also be facility for arranging awareness classes for local residents.

Teachers in the school said the intention was to encourage writing and reading at a time when the average Malayali was drifting away to the social media. Anees Basheer, the writer’s son, will inaugurate the library on November 29 in the presence of actor Mamukkoya.
