The mini stadium grounds of the Government Higher Secondary School, Udinoor, in the district was witness to a rare performance of the traditional Oppana by 121 students to set a new world record for performing the traditional dance.
The meticulously planned event on Tuesday evening is all set to enter the ‘Limca Book of World records’ for its highest number of participants.
Despite a drizzle, the artistes in their soaked costumes, danced perfectly to the rhythm of Ishal for 10 minutes unmoved by the wet ground despite the programme commencing two hours behind schedule due to steady rain.
As 12 students rendered the Ishal penned and composed by Moidu Vanimel, 108 students from the high school and higher secondary sections stepped in perfect rhythm surrounding the ‘bride’ forming four circles.
The successful showcasing of the mega event should be attributed to meticulous planning and joint efforts of PTA office-bearers, teachers and employees of the school.
The specially designed dresses, for the 121 participants, were arranged with the funds contributed by local residents and designed by a Vatakara-based costume designer.
The concept of hosting the mega cultural event was conceived by Junaid Mottammal, who had been grooming the Oppana artistes for over 17 years.
The event, witnessed and certified by K. Kunhiraman, MLA, P. P. Shyamala Devi, district panchayat president, and K. P. Jayarajan, Controller of Examinations, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore, would now be forwarded to the Limca Books of Records, the school authorities said.
