The district had many reasons to smile when the results of the SSLC examination were announced by Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb on Wednesday. It not only secured 95.14 percent success, but also came out with a stunning feat of having 1,413 students with scored A+ for all subjects, which, the education standing committee members of the district panchayat say, is the highest in all the 14 districts in the State.

Of the 47,600 students who took the exams, 45,290 got through the hurdle, giving the district an impressive pass percentage and as many as 40 schools achieved 100 per cent success.

The district has registered a visible increase in the number of students who secured A+ for all subjects this year as compared to last year’s 1,023. The number of schools that missed the cent-per cent mark for the failure of one student is another indicator of the achievement the district has attained this year. “As many as 17 schools in the district failed to hit the cent-per cent mark as one student couldn’t make it,” said Balachandran Parachottil, academic coordinator of the education standing committee.

Mr. Balachandran said the special packages introduced by the district panchayat to ensure the success of students from socially backward sections of society, including the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, had paid rich dividends.

The hurdle

It was Social Science that stood in the way of many students, who could not make it to the pass list. He said that of the 18 students of Government High School Karuvanpoyil who failed, 17 lost out to Social Science. “It points to the special focus the teachers and students need to give to the subject in the future,” he said.

In the Corporation area, the pass percentage is 94.31 while it is 95.47 in the district panchayat areas. NSS HSS Meenchanda, BEM GHSS Kozhikode, St. Josephs Boys HSS, Sree Gujarati Vidyalaya EMHS, Govt. VHSS Kuttichira, Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial EMHS, Parayancheri government Girls HS, Silver Hills HSS, Presentation HSS, JDT Iqraa EMHS, and Calicut Orphanage HSS are some prominent schools in the city that secured cent-per cent result.
