The Kozhikode Regional Transport Office has claimed big strides in bringing down the number of road accident deaths through various legal and awareness measures initiated following the direction of State Transport Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh.
Regional Transport Officer Rajiv Puthalath said here on Wednesday that the last two months witnessed a 60 per cent decline in road accident deaths, especially those involving two-wheelers. The percentage was finalised after consulting the Emergency Medicine department of various hospitals in the city, he said.
As per the official figures of the regional transport office, there was an average of 20 to 25 accident deaths reported from Kozhikode every month. “However, in the past two months, the number witnessed a huge fall. In November, only seven persons were killed in various accidents in the city,” he said.
The officer said that figures projected by other departments claiming an increase in accident rates were baseless and meant to underestimate the effort already taken by the Motor Vehicles Department. “People who doubt the statistics can contact the Emergency Medicine departments of various hospitals and understand the reality,” he said.
