Five companies of paramilitary forces will be deployed in Kozhikode district to strengthen law and order for the Lok Sabha elections.

This was announced at a meeting of election managers held at the collectorate here on Tuesday.

The security personnel will be brought from outside the State. The three “problem polling stations” in the district, all in the Vadakara constituency, will be provided additional security and webcasting facilities. Polling stations where clashes had occurred in the past will also be given extra security. The paramilitary forces for the district will arrive soon.

A clear picture of the election race in the Vadakara and the Kozhikode constituencies will be available by 3 p.m. on Wednesday when the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ends.

Nomination withdrawn

Five nominations for the Kozhikode constituency and four for Vadakara were withdrawn on Tuesday.

The nominations withdrawn in Kozhikode were of P.M. Suresh Babu, Fayiz Mohammed, M. Mehboob, Gopalan, and Reghunathan.

In Kozhikode, 17 candidates are in the fray and in Vadakara 13, with one day left for withdrawing nominations.

The candidates who remain in the fray will be allotted election symbols on Wednesday. Candidates of recognised national and regional parties will be eligible to use their own party symbols.

The Election Commission has chosen 87 symbols for Independent candidates.

Poll expense review

A meeting to review election expenses of candidates will be held at the Collectorate conference hall on Thursday and Friday, poll officials said.

The expenses for candidates in Kozhikode will be reviewed on Thursday, and for those in Vadakara the next day.
