Kozhikode: A ₹20-crore project has been proposed to solve waste disposal issues at the Kozhikode Medical College. Meanwhile, the newly built sewage treatment plant on the campus will be made operational in 10 days. A preliminary discussion on the issue was held here on Friday.
Medical Education Minister K.K. Shylaja, who attended the meeting, promised all help from the government for launching the project.
Officials at the medical college said the new treatment plant with a capacity of 2 million litres a day (MLD) was expected to be functional in 2015. Though the plant was being operated partially in 2015, it failed to meet expectations.
Hence, they proposed another project, realising that even if the plant were made fully operational, the waste disposal issue could not be addressed properly. Another sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 8 MLD has been proposed, and its estimated cost is ₹14.5 crore.
A well will be dug to store treated water, and the cost will be ₹92 lakh. A plasma gasification unit has been proposed for solid waste management. The unit can handle both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Similar units are in operation at Jamshedpur and Hyderabad now.
The officials submitted a blue print of the project to the Minister.
