Two of the six migrant labourers recently admitted to the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, with diarrhoea and vomiting have been diagnosed with cholera. District Medical Officer V. Jayashree said here on Thursday that they were from Odisha, and came to Kerala around 10 days ago. They were not keeping well when they landed here.

She said that they were part of a 20-member group who were staying in a rented place at Thengilakkadavu near Mavoor.

They had initially approached the primary health centre in Cherooppa on Monday, from where they were referred to the medical college.

Dr. Jayashree said the 14 others in the group had been given preventive medicines. Water samples from the nearby well had been sent for examination and other wells in the area had been chlorinated, she said.

Health camps were conducted in the area by Health Department staff in association with the local grama panchayat.

The owner of the building where they were staying is at large now.

“There are other shelters too in the area where migrant labourers stay. They are under observation,” she said. Dr. Jayashree pointed out that there was no outbreak of cholera in the district and the situation could be brought under control.
