The target of the State government is to make 1.35 crore unemployed persons in Kerala employable by 2022 through various skill enhancement programmes, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the functioning of an employability centre at the Civil Station in Kozhikode on Friday.

Mr. Baby John said the activities in the sector would be carried out in a proportionate way to cover the unemployed population in the State.

Altogether 50 crore citizens in the country would be benefitting from the programme, he added. According to Mr. Baby John, Kerala would be giving more emphasis on preparing the labour force for meeting the increased requirements in the emerging construction sector, security services, automobile industry, nursing field and ornament making. Along with additional skill enhancement programmes for school children, the government would also consider opening of more industrial training institutes in the State, he added.

Minister for Panchayat and Social Justice M.K. Muneer presided over the function. District Collector C.A. Latha, Additional District Magistrate K.P. Ramadevi, M.K. Raghavan, MP and MLAs C.K. Nanu, P.T.A. Rahim and Purushan Kadalundi were present.

A job fair organised as part of opening of the centre under the District Employment Exchange helped 1,494 candidates to secure jobs with leading companies. Representatives of 44 firms were present at the maiden job fair organised by the centre. Mr. Baby John inaugurated the job fair which witnessed a turnout of over 25,000 applicants.
