A team of National Commission for Women (NCW), led by its chairperson Rekha Sharma visited West Bengal’s Nadia on Thursday to inquire into "alleged atrocities on women" during the recently concluded panchayat elections in the State.
Ms. Sharma alleged that police were non-cooperative and denied to show documents, including FIRs of the cases, during the inquiry.
“The Inquiry Committee, led by Smt. @sharmarekha, later visited #Shantipur Police Station in #Nadia district to inquire on reports concerning a gangrape case and a murder case. Police were non-cooperative and denied to show documents- including FIRs of the cases- during inquiry,” a tweet by the official tweeted handle of NCW said.
Ms. Sharma alleged that West Bengal administration was not cooperative to the Commission. “Chief Secretary, West Bengal will not be able to meet today, tomorrow or day after due to his tight schedule, informed by his office. This is the message my PS got from CS's office,” Ms. Sharma tweeted from her own handle.
Alleging that “all human rights are under threat” in West Bengal NCW chairperson said that a large number of women have suffered all kinds of violence in last elections. Ms. Sharma said that she came across “horrible stories” from women during her visit.
