At least 15 persons were injured in an explosion inside a local train compartment on the Sealdah -Krishnanagar line in the early hours of Tuesday.
There were no casualties but six people suffered grievous injuries and had to be hospitalised.
Scuffle among miscreantsAccording to a press release issued by the Eastern Railway, the explosion occurred at 3.55 a.m. in the fifth compartment from the engine of Sealdah–Krishnanagar local soon after the train left the Titagarh station in North 24 Parganas district.
“From eyewitness accounts, we have come to know that that the crude bomb blast took place during a scuffle among some miscreants in the compartment. We are yet to ascertain the reason for the blast,” Superintendent of Railway Police, Sealdah, Debashish Bej told The Hindu .
Some passengers claimed that it was an attempted robbery gone wrong and not a “gang war” as was claimed by some of the officials. The passengers got panicky, and some of them jumping off the train. Senior railway officials, including General Manager of Eastern Railway R. K. Gupta, visited the injured at B.R. Singh Railway Hospital in Kolkata.
‘Of low-intensity’Describing the explosion as a low-intensity one, Mr. Gupta said that forensic tests were being conducted to determine its nature.
