The Left Front Legislature Party on Wednesday met Governor M K Narayanan and alleged that hooligans and anti-social elements with State government assistance unleashed brutal attacks on supporters and workers of Left parties.

“Incidents of arson, loot, murderous attack, demolition and burning of houses and even livestock of the supporters of the Left parties, molestation of women, forceful occupation of the party offices of the Opposition parties have been reported from almost all corners of the State,” the memorandum submitted to the Left Legislature party said. The members of the delegation complained to the Governor that the Left Front supporters were not even allowed to harvest their standing crops, and their access to irrigation and even drinking water was denied.

The delegation said thousands of the Left supporters were being harassed and the police were not registering any complaints against them. Leaders of the ruling party who were perpetrating violence were not being apprehended by police

Maintaining that the attacks would not only debilitate other the secular forces of the State, the letter, signed by the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra and others, said the “situation will create estrangement among different sections of society irrespective of political allegiance”.

“We apprehend that no party or person, including those who support the ruling party, will be spared from the evil in the long run,” the letter said. The delegation also submitted a list of incidents of violence reported in different districts of the State.

Urging the Governor to save the supporters the from the “emerging anarchic situation” the delegation said it was hopeful that the Governor “will take the role of guardian of the aggrieved and suffering people of the State.”
