Villager killed by elephant

A villager was killed by an elephant in West Bengal Bankura district on Saturday. The incident occurred at Kuchkunda village under Barjora Forest range in the district.

Senior Forest officials said that a herd of four elephants had strayed into the village. The 25-year-old villager Subodh Bauri was sleeping outside his house when an elephant attacked him in the early hours of the day.

Man-elephant conflict continues in south Bengal where small tracts of forest are surrounded by large agricultural fields has claimed over 240 lives in the past ten years.

In another development, three elephants had strayed in Ausgram area of State’s Bardhaman district in south Bengal and damaged some crops. Efforts are on drive the elephants back to the forests.
