: CPI (M) leader Saifuddin Chowdhury (62) lost his battle with cancer on Sunday.
His funeral will be performed at his birthplace at Memari in Bardhaman district on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Chowdhury was staying in Delhi over the past years.
Born in 1952, Mr. Chowdhury started his political life with student politics in the 1960s.
He became a party member later in the decade, while he worked as an organiser of CPI (M)’s student’s wing, Students Federation of India (SFI)
His powerful oratory and leadership skills propelled him to higher ranks in the party and he eventually became a CPI (M) Central Committee (CC) member at the age of 31.
He proved his mettle in electoral politics in 1980 when he was elected an MP from Bardhaman’s Katwa constituency.

Born on April, 24 1930, he became a member of the undivided Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1948.
After CPI’s split in 1964 he joined the CPI (M). He played an important role in the peasant rebellion in Bardhaman in 1967 and 1969. He courted controversy due to some of his remarks during the anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram in Purba Medinipur.
