There was furore in the Assembly on Monday over twin incidents of violence in the State, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a statement relating to these incidents.
With the start of the proceedings, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee moved a motion condemning the >murder of CEO of Northbrooke Jute Mill at Champdani in Hooghly and the >murder of four supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) at Raidighi in South 24 Parganas district.
Mr. Chatterjee said the murder of four Trinamool workers was part of ‘a conspiracy’ hatched jointly by goons of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also condemned the murder of the CEO of the jute mill.
The Left Front MLAs raised objections to the text of the motion and walked out of the Assembly.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her statement said, “An unruly section of workers was responsible’ for the murder of the CEO at the jute mill. Militant trade unionism would not be tolerated, she said, adding that she had directed the Finance Minister to speak to the owner of the jute mill.
The Chief Minister said that those associated with the labour wings of the BJP and the CPI (M) were responsible for the incident.
Accusation on media She also accused a section of media of spreading rumours in connection with the incident. A total of 10 persons - six at Champdani and four at Raidighi – had been arrested, she said.
On the violence at Raidighi, she said those killed were ‘important’ to the party.
Responding to the demands of a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made by the Congress MLAs, the Chief Minister said such demands were not justified.
“In such case, the CBI should be asked to govern the State… what is the purpose of having State Assembly?” she said.
Reacting to the developments in the House, Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said the violence at Raidighi was a result of the factionalism of the TMC and the CPI (M) had nothing to do with it.
“The Trinamool had given a call to observe ‘black day’ on Monday in protest against violence at Raidighi. They are the ones who are perpetrating the violence,” Mr. Mishra told journalists.
