Private tutor Pooja Singh, whose brutal thrashing of a three-and-a-half-year-old child was caught on camera, was produced before a city court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till July 30.

Officials of Lake Town police station arrested her from Rashbehari late on Friday. She has been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, which refer to attempt to culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, and theft.

During the proceedings at a court in Bidhannagar, the accused admitted to beating the child but said she had never made such a mistake in the past.

Ms. Singh said that she had given tuition to other children in the family and claimed that she was a ‘good teacher’.

Though none of the advocates of Bidhananagar Sub-divisional Court came forward to defend her, the accused was provided help by the State’s Legal Services Authorities.

The footage of the closed circuit television camera installed at the child’s house where the accused is seen kicking and hurling the child on bed was telecast by certain television channels on Wednesday.
