A day after West Bengal Transport and Sports Minister Madan Mitra was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) decided to put on hold the sit in demonstration near the Eden Gardens stadium in Central Kolkata.

Earlier, ‘sports lovers’ organising the protest said that it will go on until Mr. Mitra’s release. AITC secretary general and State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters that “the protest is not over yet”. “Sports lovers will spread it to various districts,” he said. Hence, the sit in demonstration has been put on hold for now.

The Opposition parties claimed that the decision was taken in the backdrop of the dwindling crowd at the protest venue. Interestingly soon after the ‘sports lovers’ rally against Mr. Mitra’s arrest by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam, there crowd at the protest venue steadily decreased.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mitra who was admitted to SSKM hospital on Friday had been shifted to the Hospital’s Woodburn ward during the day.
