In a reported case of faction feud in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), three party workers were shot in Bengal’s Birbhum district on Monday. The TMC district leadership, however, denied that the murders were due to in-fighting in the party.
The incident took place in the Nanoor Assembly constituency when three TMC workers -- Kurban Seikh, Seikh Buro and Seikh Murtaza -- were going to Bahiri village on a motorbike in the afternoon. “Suddenly an ambulance rammed the bike. When the three fell down, some miscreants came out of the ambulance and shot them,” locals said.
Superintendent of Police, Birbhum Mukesh Kumar could not be reached for comments.
Interestingly, local TMC MLA Gadadhar Hazra did not deny the rumours of faction feud in the murders. “The three persons were TMC workers and the ambulance that was used in the murder was bought from my MLA fund,” he told The Hindu .
Mr. Hazra also said that the accused must be brought to justice. “I don’t know whether it is a case of faction feud,” he added.
According to locals, the murders were an outcome of the faction feud between the followers of Mr. Hazra and local TMC leader Kajol Seikh. Mr. Seikh claimed that he was not aware of the incident. “I am in Kolkata now and have not heard of the matter yet. I will look into it,” he said.
Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal denied any involvement of TMC workers in the incident. “There is no question of any faction feud here and none of our workers was involved in the murders. It is a work of anti-socials,” Mr. Mondal told journalists.
