The Visva- Bharati University suspended three students on Saturday in connection with the allegations of sexual harassment of a first year student. “As soon as the complaint was brought to the Vice-Chancellor, he asked the Internal Complaints Committee for Prevention of Sexual Harassment against Women at Workplace to investigate,” a press release issued by the Central University, located in Birbhum district, said.
The statement said the committee submitted its report within 48 hours after it was set up. Based on the report, three students have been suspended, it added.
Earlier in the day, students organised protests within the campus demanding action against the accused. They submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor.
An FIR has been lodged by the University authorities.
The girl who left the University on Friday had alleged that four persons including three students molested her on the pretext of finding accommodation for her.
The student had also alleged that the accused recorded video of the incident and blackmailed her.
The father of the student who hails from Sikkim had met the university authorities on Friday. He claimed that the authorities had asked him not to report to the police or speak to the media about the incident.
