Taslima unwelcome: Trinamool MP

May 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - KOLKATA:

Supporting writers like Taslima Nasreen would amount to encouraging communalism, said Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Idris Ali here on Sunday.

“Taslima Nasreen is an indecent woman who was encouraged to write hateful and anti-Islamic texts about Prophet Mohammad while she was in Kolkata,” Mr. Ali said at an event.

Mr. Ali had been at the forefront of organising protests against the Bangladeshi writer in 2007, demanding her expulsion from West Bengal. He was later arrested for allegedly inciting communal riots in the city.

“Ms. Nasreen wrote offensive things about Prophet Mohammed. I have always been vocal about protesting against any form of violence on any religious group. I had staged protest before the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission when Hindus in Bangladesh were being attacked. I have successfully contested elections from a Hindu-majority constituency in the State,” Mr. Ali said.

Asked if he would take to the streets if Ms. Nasreen came to the city, Mr. Ali said those who allowed Ms. Nasreen’s entry into the State would have to ‘face the consequences.’
