Alarmed with the shocking video of a private tutor mercilessly beating a three-and-half-year-old child at Lake Town the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, (SCPCR) will issue an advisory to the West Bengal government on “private tuition”.
Ashokendu Sengupta, the chairperson of the SCPCR told The Hindu that after he learnt about the incident he visited the family of the child who was “ brutally tortured” by a private tutor.
“I also spoke to the child and assured the parents that we will provide all help. We offered protection to the family but the parents said that they do not need any security,” Prof. Sengupta said.
He said that the family only urged him to ensure that such an incident is not repeated.
“I spoke to the police and the officials told me that they are trying to apprehend the guilty teacher and she is absconding,” he said.
Prof Sengupta said that he visited the child’s residence with another member of the SCPCR and District Child Protection Officer and found that the child was in trauma.
The clippings which were recorded by the closed circuit television cameras inside the home and broadcast by television channels showed the child falling to the ground as the woman teacher forcefully kicked him.
She also threw the child on the bed and repeated slapped him.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, Debasish Dhar said there was no separate law or section for private or government tutors.
“We will see the relevant Acts and take whatever punitive action is permitted by the law,” he said.
