Six more super specialty hospitals would be set up in the State, the official website of the Trinamool Congress said on Saturday.
The hospitals would be coming up at Bongaon, Kalna, Asansol, Srirampur, Arambagh and Basirhat and it would cost the State government Rs. 300 crore.
This was also highlighted by State Minister of Health Chandrima Bhattacharya in the Assembly during a discussion on the Health Budget on Friday. The Minister said that since the hospitals would be set up in districts where Backward Region Grant Fund was not provided by the Centre, the State government would bear the entire cost.
The hospitals would have all facilities, including critical care unit, intensive care unit, and other facilities, the website stated.
“The State government has also decided to provide one-third of the amount for medical treatment claimed by the families having a monthly income of Rs. 6,000 under the State Illness Assistance Fund ,” the website stated. Earlier, persons with a monthly income of Rs. 3,000 were entitled to get this benefit.
The State government contributed Rs. 5 crore in the current financial year for a second campus of the Centrally-funded Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI), which is set to come up at New Town on the city’s outskirts, Ms. Bhattacharya told the Assembly.
It has become imperative to set up a cancer institute offering advanced and comprehensive cancer care facilities with the number of cancer patients in the State going up. It was in this perspective that the second campus of the CNCI was thought of, Ms. Bhattacharya said.
The State government had provided 75 per cent of the cost of 10 acres of land provided to CNCI, she added.
There were plans to set up tertiary cancer care centres at the State-run Sagar Dutta Hospital in Murshidabad and at the Burdwan Medical College, Ms. Bhattacharya said.
