Sibal should not represent Trinamool in apex court in Saradha case: AICC

He should take note of sentiments of the State party unit: Surjewala

Endorsing the stand taken by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, the All-India Congress Committee on Wednesday urged former Union Minister Kapil Sibal to take into consideration the sentiments of the State unit of party on the issue of representing the Trinamool Congress in the Supreme Court.

The State Congress has been vehemently opposing Mr Sibal’s decision to represent the Trinamool Congress in the Supreme Court in connection to the Saradha scam.

While C. P. Joshi, the party general secretary in-charge of the West Bengal, said that he fully endorses the views expressed by the West Bengal Congress, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that Mr Sibal should take note of the sentiments of the party unit in West Bengal.

West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said on Tuesday that he had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi protesting against the development.

Mr. Chowdhury minced no words in criticising Mr. Sibal’s decision and said that the former Union Minister “will not be welcome to any event by the State Congress as long as he is the president of the Bengal unit”.

Interestingly, it was at the initiative of senior State Congress leader Andul Mannan that the CBI was directed by the Supreme Court to investigate the Saradha scam. The decision of Mr Sibal to represent the Trinamool Congress in the apex court is also seen in political circles beginning of new political understanding between the two parties, which the Bengal unit of Congress is opposed to.

Commenting on the developments in the capital senior Congress leader Omprakash Mishra expressed happiness and said that the AICC had never endorsed Mr Sibal decision to represent the Trinamool Congress.

“ Mr Sibal was taking a professional call on the matter but the case has huge political ramifications for the party. We are happy that the Central leadership has understood our stand,” Mr Mishra said.
