Senior minister of Trinamool Congress, Madan Mitra, one of the key accused in the multi-crore Saradha Chit fund scam, was sent to 14 days' judicial custody on Friday.
The investigating agency, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), told the court that Mr. Mitra is a “high powered” politician, who is capable of “tampering” with evidence, if he is granted bail.
Accordingly, Mr Mitra’s bail plea was rejected and he was sent to judicial custody till January 2, 2015.
The senior minister was arrested last Friday after day long interrogation on basis of what is described as “prima-facie evidence” and was remanded to CBI custody.
Mr. Mitra was systematically interrogated over last one week by half a dozen officers of the central agency.
Mr. Mitra’s counsel, Ashoke Mukherjee denied any involvement of the minister in the Saradha scam.
