A day after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) took out a rally in the city in protest against the fare hike, TMC’s youth wing Trinamool Yuva organised a rally demanding “immediate rollback” of the hike in passenger fare and freight charges.
Leading the procession was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
The TMC MP from Diamond Harbour, who is also the president of Trinamool Yuva, accused the BJP of being “anti-people” for hiking the rail fares.
“They have no concern for the poor. This fare hike will not cause any difficulty to BJP leaders. But the poor have to bear the brunt of it,” he charged.
Mr. Banerjee said the poor people coming from villages and suburbs to Kolkata to earn their livelihood would be the “worst effected” since they depended on the Railways to make their daily journey. Ridiculing the BJP leaders, he said, “They only think about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and clinging to power. They have forgotten about the people.”
Mr. Banerjee threatened to carry on the agitation till the fare hike was rolled back.
