Protests erupt in suburbs

Govt. has done precious little, allege residents

Protests erupted in the Maheshtala area in the southern fringes of Kolkata with hundreds of people complaining about poor civic facilities.

The locals alleged that late on Friday, two persons died of dengue in the area.

The civic authorities had done “precious little,” they said. A vehicle of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was set on fire. The incident took place in the Dinu Mitra Bagan area which is located where the jurisdiction of the KMC ends and that of the Maheshtala Municipality begins.

A huge contingent of police was deployed in the area. The police used baton charge to disperse the crowd.

The incident comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government is increasingly coming under pressure due to the dengue outbreak in West Bengal.

While the Opposition is targeting the TMC government for its alleged failure to tackle the issue, the Calcutta High Court has instructed the State government to file an affidavit in this regard.
