President urges universities to adopt villages

November 28, 2014 11:37 pm | Updated 11:37 pm IST - Kolkata:

Lauding the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana to set up model villages, President Pranab Mukherjee urged the University of Calcutta to follow what Members of Parliament are doing and adopt five villages.

“I have called upon the central higher level [educational] institutions to adopt at least five villages each and transform them into model villages by providing solutions to problems through resource persons and experts available. I ask this University to pioneer the drive in the adjoining areas,” Mr. Mukherjee said, while delivering the convocation address of the university on Friday.

The President said the scheme envisages better access to governmental services, wider social mobility, financial inclusion and expansion of physical infrastructure for the people in the village.

The university conferred a D. Litt (Honoris Causa) on the President.
