A Kolkata based human rights organisation has filed a Public Interest Litigation to the Calcutta High Court on Monday and demanded the court’s intervention in the case of lynching of Korban Shah at the Nil Ratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital. Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has also demanded that a compensation of Rs.10 lakhs be awarded to the wife and children of Mr. Shah. No arrests have been made in the case so far, police sources said. Mr. Shah was allegedly beaten to death by junior doctors of the college on November 16.

“We have asked for a High Court monitored probe of the case,” APDR counsel Susmita Saha Dutta told The Hindu . In the PIL, APDR has demanded speedy probe and adequate punishment of the culprits in the case. Earlier it has written National Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention in the case.

APDR has urged the High Court to instruct the Directorate of Health Services of the West Bengal Government to “initiate appropriate proceedings” against the “erring” members of the staff of NRS Medical College and Hospital for not cooperating in the probe. It has alleged that the murder was committed by the by the “inmates of the students’ hostel of NRS Medical College and Hospital.”

Meanwhile, a protest demonstration led by senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Kanti Ganguly was organised in front of the Entally police station in demand of judicial probe of the case and the removal of the officer-in-charge of the concerned police station and the Principal of NRS Medical College and Hospital. “We have also demanded adequate compensation to the family members of Mr. Shah,” Mr. Ganguly said.

A protest was also organised by human rights organisations near the NRS Medical College and Hospital and was attended by human rights activists. “We condemn the brutal murder of Mr. Shah and demand adequate punishment of the culprits and those who are trying to shield them,” social activist Miratun Nahar, who participated in the demonstration said.
