People from Delhi creating division in West Bengal: Minister

Partha Chatterjee says Bengal is getting communalised

June 09, 2014 10:16 am | Updated 10:16 am IST - Kolkata:

On a day the BJP unveiled its plan to get more teams from Delhi to investigate alleged attacks on their workers and the RSS held its first public meeting, the ruling Trinamool Congress said that politics in Bengal is getting “communalised.”

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Minister Partha Chatterjee said “some political parties” are using “religion” to vitiate the atmosphere in the State. He reiterated that while the Centre’s “job” was to stand by a State, they (Centre) are “trying to disturb the peace (in the State).” Without naming any political party, he said people from Delhi are arriving to Kolkata on a regular basis to create “division” on the basis of politics of identities and that the Central government is not cooperating with the State in any way.

Perhaps, for the first time has any TMC leader so openly said that the politics of “religion” is fast becoming an issue in Bengal, albeit without naming the BJP or any organisation. Political parties were increasingly harping on communal politics to “disturb” the State and “create riots,” Mr. Chatterjee said.

“They are trying to create riots by bringing in people from outside for their own political mileage,” he said.

A central team of the BJP visited the State last week to probe clashes between the TMC and BJP supporters. The team accused the TMC of attacking its supporters. On Sunday, a party leader said that the minority cell of the party, located in Delhi, would visit Bengal shortly and submit a report to the National Commission of Minorities, as the person killed in Birbhum belongs to the minority community.

Another State-level team visited Birbhum on Sunday to probe the alleged killing of the minority community member. This systematic dispatching of fact-finding team to Bengal on a weekly basis clearly irked TMC leaders, and Mr. Chatterjee minced no words in pointing at the BJP for trying to create a “rift” among communities.

“Some people board the flights and land here. They include a handful of people from the State with them and try to initiate a rift between Bengalis and non-Bengali speaking people, between this or that religion and thus encourage a divisive politics,” Mr. Chatterjee said.

“After 34 years of Left’s rule, when people got some relief…these people are trying to disturb the peace across the State,” he added.
