Parties unanimous in opposing Kalyan Singh as Governor

July 10, 2014 11:09 am | Updated 11:09 am IST - Kolkata:

The Left Front, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress agreed in the Assembly here on Wednesday that an “active politician” linked with the ruling party at the Centre and one who has “associations with communal incidents” should not be appointed the Governor of the State.

The development comes in the wake of reports that former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Kalyan Singh would be appointed as the Governor.

Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra put up a notice in the Assembly on Tuesday urging the State government to take up the issue with the Centre. On Tuesday, the Left Front legislators walked out of the Assembly when a discussion was not allowed on the issue.

Speaker Biman Banerjee on Wednesday allowed a discussion on the notice.

Participating in the discussion, senior legislator of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Anisur Rahaman said there were reports that Mr. Singh, whose name was linked to the demolition of Babri Masjid, was being appointed as the Governor.

The State government should make its stand clear on the issue, he added.

Participating in the debate, Congress MLA Mohd Sohrab said going by the recommendations of the Sarkaria Commission, the Centre should not appoint an active politician as Governor.

Trinamool Congress MLA Silbhadra Dutta said he also came across reports that Kalyan Singh was likely to be appointed the State’s Governor. The Centre should discuss the matter with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee before taking any decision, he added.
