State’s Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Wednesday met vice-chancellors of all the State Universities and told them centralised online admission at the University level will not be considered for implementation.
Those present in the meeting said that the Minister promised that in the next six months, the State government would help all the colleges in the State to have their own web portal.
Mr. Chatterjee reportedly told the academicians to stay away from the media and said that press can ‘interpret’ and ‘twist’ the information that they provide, as it happened in the case of online admissions. Those present at the meeting said that the Minister spent much of the time explaining how they should leave the handling of media to politicians.
The Minister decision of stalling online-centralised admission at University of Calcutta and Burdwan University had generated headlines in the media. The State government however has allowed college level online admissions in 75 institutions that has requisite infrastructure.
“This was our first meeting with the Minister since he has taken the office. He asked all the Universities to tell him what they want, what difficulties they are facing and how the State government can help,” said Anuradha Lohia, vice-chancellor of Presidency University while coming out of the meeting.
The Minister also urged the representatives of the universities to come up with a road map on development of the universities. Mr Chaterjee will meet the vice chancellors of State Universities once in three months.
