West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday inaugurated the newly renovated house of Sister Nivedita at 16 Bose Para Lane in Baghbazar area of north Kolkata.
The house will be kept open for the public from October 23 to 28 and November 12 to 14.
October 28 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita, the Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She was born Margaret Elizabeth Noble. It was this single-storied house which served as her first residence. A girls school was set up in 1898.
Describing the house as a “mute but not unexpressive witness to the glorious phase of the Bengal Renaissance” a press release from Ramakrishna Sarada Mission added that not only Sister Nivedita but Holy Mother Sarada Devi lived there for more than a year.
Eminent personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore, Girish Chandra Ghosh, Jagadish Chandra Bose and Sri Aurobindo frequented the house to seek advice from Sister Nivedita.
