Nepal requires a large quantity of corrugated galvanised iron roofing sheets to build shelters for people displaced by the earth quake, Consul General Chandra Kumar Ghimire said here on Thursday. He was speaking at an event organised by the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
The MCCI donated Rs. 31 lakh to Mr. Ghimire for relief and rehabilitation work.
“While we were in dire need of tarpaulin sheets soon after the earthquake struck, we now need corrugated sheets as the government is trying to build shelters for the homeless. The Nepal government has asked manufacturers of corrugated sheets in the country not to export their production for some time as it will be required for domestic use,” Mr. Ghimire said.
Expressing his gratitude to the West Bengal government for the support, the Consul General said the State government had been prompt to rush in with aid and had contributed 1.70 lakh tarpaulin sheets which was a “huge relief”.
Nepal lost 32 to 35 per cent of its GDP and rendered almost 90 per cent of the people in Kathmandu homeless, Mr. Ghimire said.
