Nearly a month after a youth was allegedly lynched at the Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital, the Kolkata police arrested a first year medical student in connection with the murder.

Senior officers of the Kolkata Police said that they have arrested Jasimuddin, a first year student in connection with the lynching. The student was produced before a city court on Wednesday which remanded him in police custody till December 24.

During the proceedings in the premises of Sealdah Court, there was a ruckus created by certain students. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate directed the police to summon one of the students making noise. The Judge condemned the behaviour of the medical students.

Meanwhile, Ajmira Begum, wife of the youth Korpan Shah, who was allegedly killed at the medical college hostel on November 16, said that not one person but many are involved in the murder of her husband and all of them should be arrested.

The incident had attracted widespread condemnation from people and civil rights activists. There were allegations against the medical college authorities of trying to hush up the matter.

A civil rights body, Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a probe into the incident. The representatives of APDR have sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission.

“We will continue with our protests and the legal battle to ensure justice to Korpan Shah,” APDR vice-president Ranajit Sur said.
