On completion of four years in office, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Wednesday that despite financial constraints her government has fulfilled its commitments to the people.

“In spite of the legacy of the huge debt burden left by the previous government, so many hurdles, financial constraints ... we have delivered our best and fulfilled our commitments,” she said on a social networking site.

The Chief Minister lauded her government as many of its schemes have won international acclaim.

“During the last four years, several schemes/projects of Bengal and our performance have won acclaim from international organisations like the World Bank, the United Nations and the UNICEF. Many of the schemes have got national recognition and have been recommended as models for other States,” she said.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister honoured prominent citizens with Banga Bibhusan and Banga Bhushan.

Those conferred with Banga Bibhusan included Tennis star Leander Paes and industrialist Sanjeev Goenka. Well-known film director Shoojit Sircar was honoured with Banga Bhushan. Prominent sportspersons, singers, artists, business personalities and voluntary organisation were conferred awards by the State government.

Several Opposition parties, however, rebutted the claims made by Ms Banerjee.

“These four years have been the darkest chapter in the history of Bengal which have pushed the State backwards…. The four years represent lawlessness,” Left Front chairperson Biman Basu said.
