A student from the North-east was killed on Sunday night after he was pushed off a speeding train in West Bengal.

The deceased identified as Kanta Soram of Lukher village in Imphal west district was studying in West Bengal. He was travelling in the Dibrugrah--Basantapur Express. He rang up his mother from the Howarh station. Late in the night his mother called up on his mobile. Nobody took the call.

Much later, one stranger picked the phone to inform the student’s mother about the incident. The body was recovered some distance away the same night from the Howarh station.

It is suspected that the criminals took his mobile phone, cash and other valuables including a laptop and then pushed him off the train.

Following a series of attacks in Bangalore and Gurgaon, the Union Home Ministry had issued directives to all the State chief ministers to make arrangements for the protection of people from the North-east. Though police have registered a case, no arrest has been made.
